The Spanish Civil War takes the parents of Carlos, who is sent to a school for the orphans of fighter against fascism. His bed was recently vacated by Santi, a boy who died in a recent bombing; an undetonated bomb remains in the school courtyard threatening them all. Again and again, Santi comes to haunt Carlos, warning him that the death of many of the school's inhabitants is near. Is it the bomb, the looming onslaught of Franco's troops, or the mysterious storage room the one with the deep well? The Devil's Backbone is a horror movie set against the themes of war, brutality, and the loss of innocence.
