During the Dark Ages, the Irish overcome the British and split the tribes. Englishman Lord Marke (Rufus Sewell) takes responsibility for the upbringing of Tristan (James Franco) who shows warrior promise. Meanwhile, Isolde (Sophia Myles) is being raised as the daughter of a mean Irish king. The Irish attack Tristan's land, and he is left to die after battle. He is set to sea in a funeral boat, but Isolde recovers him. She nurtures him, and the two form a romantic bond. The two are separated and the star-crossed lovers must hide their love as Lord Marke makes Tristan find him a bride.
