"Stay" is a twisted and mesmerizing chess game in which Henry (Ryan Gosling) turns to psychiatrist Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor) in a desperate attempt to cross the line between delusion and reality. After Henry delivers a suicide threat, Sam becomes emotionally involved in trying to save Henry from himself as he once saved his artist girlfriend, Lila (Naomi Watts) from her darker side. It is an intricate and fast paced psychological battle between life and death as, with the help of Lila, Sam tries to stay anchored to reality in order to help Henry, who is angry, confused, and swiftly slipping away.
