College student Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) and his girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker), along with his sister Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss), his friend Scott (Richard DeManincor) and Scott's girlfriend Shelly (Theresa Tilly) rent an old Professor's cabin in the woods for a weekend hoping for fun. What they find instead is terror, when they unwittingly unleash an ancient evil bent on destroying them all. Ash finds a mysterious book in the basement along with a tape of the professor reading the translations of the ancient words. This book is the Necronomicon, an ancient book of rituals for raising the dead, bound in human flesh and inked in human blood, and when the recording plays it awakens the evil deadites. One by one, the kids are transformed into flesh eating living deadites that can only be stopped by dismemberment. The woods come alive, turning against those who try to escape. Ash sees his companions die one by one, until only he is left to stand against the Evil Dead.
