Left mute after seeing his father killed in a railway accident when he was nine Ryan Flynn (Ryan Kelley) wants desperately to be able to see the man in the moon as represented in a picture his father drew for him before his death. While out rollerblading with his friend Rocky (Michael Angarano) Ryan has a terrible accident which leaves him cognizant of the Dust Factory, a place where his senile grandfather (Armin Mueller-Stahl) is lucid and Ryan meets Melanie (Hayden Panettiere) who lives outside of Ryan's expectations of the world.
