Nearing the end of a 12 year prison stretch, Walter (Kevin Bacon) a convicted paedophile, starts to make plans for his future in the outside world. He needs to find a job and somewhere to live. Being an accomplished carpenter he soon finds work in a lumber yard. Having trouble finding an apartment he manages to find a roof over his head in a building that is opposite a school. Being outcast from his family apart from his brother in law Carlos (Banjamin Bratt), Walter struggles to cope outside of the institution where he has spent the last twelve years. Aware of Walters release from prison Sgt Lucas (Mos Def) keeps a watchful eye over his activities. It is not long before the town folk start to throw accusing stares and start to spread the gossip about Walter making it increasingly difficult for him to rebuild his life and concentrate on his new found love with his co-worker Vickie (Kyra Sedgwick).
