A recently divorced father Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds) is asked by his young daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin) to explain love and relationships. Will tells his daughter about his past loves and losses as a political consultant in Manhattan in the 1990s. His daughter wants to know about how her mother and father met but Will tells Maya about three different women that he loved. He tells her one of the three is her mother and she must guess which one. In learning about her father's past, Maya learns that love is not as simple as she once thought and Will learns some important things in the telling about his current love life.
