After a coffee shop owner, Bradley Thomas (Greg Kinnear), is dumped by his first wife, he looks to his friend Harry Stevenson (Morgan Freeman) as a mentor. He views the long-time relationship that Harry has with his wife Esther (Jane Alexander) as an example of the kind of love relationship he would love to have. But Harry and Esther have some healing to do, themselves, in their own love losses. When Bradley meets and falls in love with Diana (Radha Mitchell) and they move in next door to Harry and Esther, the older couple parent them through their early stages of love but know more than they can tell Bradley about Diana, concluding that he will have to find out for himself without their interference. Still, they are there to help when he falls and also learn more about love.
