Life imitates art. Famous poet Edgar Allan Poe (Jeffrey Combs) tries to keep his beautiful young wife Virginia Poe (Elyse Levesque) happy and well-provided for in 1840, but the only way to make money is to write horror stories, not poems. When his wife becomes ill, Poe turns to drink and finds her pets, especially a black cat named Pluto, are interrupting his work routine. The black cat even drives Poe to more drink with the local barman (Patrick Gallagher). The furry animal inspires Poe with a variety of tortures and cruelties that will comprise a new short story to give to his publisher George Graham (Aron Tager).
